Director, Curriculum Design and Development, MICA Position Summary: Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) seeks a collaborative, strategic, solution-oriented problem solver to help the Open Studies academic unit, grow our capacity to respond to learning needs across our educational programs, with particular emphasis on online degree programming. The director provides vision and leadership aimed at developing novel and scalable ways to provide greater access to high quality learning experiences to diverse audiences. The director supports and guides academic program leadership, instructors, and students in the use and implementation of best-in-class educational models, instructional materials, and technology. The position includes the supervision of help desk staff employed in support of MICA's online learning community. General Purpose: The Director, Curriculum Design and Development works to ensure the quality and value of Open Studies programming while innovating ways to create new programming with new curricular approaches. Position Responsibilities: Open Studies serves a diverse student body of traditional and non-traditional college students, art and design professionals, lifelong learners, teens, and children. The unit administers four unique professional graduate programs in the Business of Art and Design, Information Visualization, UX Design, and Design Leadership along with studio-based art and design classes for adults, teens, and children, short-term travel programs, and pipeline and cultural orientation programs in support of the college's diversity and internationalization goals. As MICA's educational venture space the unit is engaged in innovating academic programming (including digital education, new curricular areas and program structures, and programs for non-traditional students) and revenue growth. The Director, Curriculum Design and Development will: Work to assess/evaluate current online programs to assure quality Evaluate and strengthen program delivery models Evaluate and strengthen instructor/student onboarding and preparation for online learning Manage e-learning environments (MICA currently uses Canvas and Zoom as our primary e-learning tools): o Research, preview, evaluate, and recommend necessary e-learning tools and services and assistive technology Support instructors by providing the foundation materials for courses and giving constructive feedback on how instructors are implementing those materials Coordinate the development of instructional materials that are functional, informative, and consistent with sound instructional design principles, including alignment of educational objectives with content, activities, and assessments Provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and online interactive activities Create, document and improve processes, standards, and best practices, as needed In consultation with MICA's Learning Resource Center: o Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act o Guide adherence with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 o Ensure design & style consistency for standardization, branding, normalization, and accessibility o Conduct Assistive Technology assessments with faculty and students and partner with them to implement, install, train, and follow up on recommendations Provide Web Accessibility guidance and consultation to Open Studies instructors, students, and staff Hire, train, and supervise help desk staff in support of the e-learning environment including approaches to supporting students having accessibility issues Coordinate work with academic program leads Budget oversight responsibilities for some restricted and/or endowed funds Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in related field Knowledge of current theories, trends, and innovations related to contemporary approaches to curriculum design and development and Adult Learning Theory Ability to evaluate instructional and program effectiveness Experience with e-learning technologies including various operating systems, file structures, file formats, protocols, streaming audio and video, podcasting, and social networking tools Experience with Canvas and Zoom Knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices associated with students with disabilities, assistive technology and copyright issues (ADA, 504, 508, WCAG, FERPA, Chafee law, etc.) Familiarity with assistive technology and software programs for individuals with disabilities Ability to gather, interpret, and extract meaning from data Capacity to develop, implement, and manage strategic objectives A collaborative, entrepreneurial, proactive style with excellent human relations skills Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple projects Detail oriented and deadline driven work ethic Excellent written and verbal communication Ability to manage budget and personnel Preferred Qualifications: Background in or knowledge of art and design education Reporting to this position: Help Desk Technician, PT Physical demands and work environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually (minimal, moderate, or high).
