JOB TITLE: Assistant Principal
REPORTS TO: Principal
NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
The Assistant Principal may be assigned overall responsibility in the complex or building to which he/she is assigned to evaluate and provide leadership for the instructional program of the high school; to provide for the systematic study and analysis of the teaching-learning process and the development, implementation and evaluation of instructional programs; to provide for the development, alignment and implementation of quality curriculum to enhance student achievement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Assistant Principal shall:

  • Possess a Master's Degree or higher.
  • Possess a valid NJ Principal Certificate.
  • Must have experience as a classroom instructor and should have a working knowledge of special needs, secondary subject matter areas and/or career and technical education.
  • Experience with teacher observation and evaluation, student discipline, student activities, curriculum and grant management are desirable.
  • Curriculum and staff development experience preferred.
  • Supervisory experience with students and staff under an appropriate certificate or license is highly desirable.
  • Hold a valid driver's license with no serious violations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment, and research related to learning.
  • Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, and the community.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use technology for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.
  • Provide proof of U. S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
  • Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education, or, during the initial six month period provide a sworn statement that there have not been any convictions of a crime or a disorderly persons offense in accordance with 18A:6-7.1.
  • Provide information that includes current/former employers within the last twenty (20) years in which the employment involved direct contact with children ; a written authorization that consents to current and former employers disclosing certain information; and a written statement as to whether the applicant has any employment history regarding child abuse and/or sexual misconduct in accordance with N.J.S.A.18A:6-7.6.
  • Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
  • Pass the State required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
  • Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

  • District Application and resume.
  • Required documentation as outlined in the qualifications above.
  • A minimum of three letters of reference from former employers or other professional sources, or copies of recent evaluations and observations of performance.

    EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
    The Assistant Principal shall be employed under the following terms:

  • 12 Month Position
  • Salary, benefits, leave time and conditions as specified in the Non Bargaining Employee Benefit Manual.
  • Conditions established by all laws and codes of the State and all policies, rules, and regulations established by the Board of Education (N.J.S.A. 18A:27-4 et seq.).

    JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The Assistant Principal shall:

  • Assist the Principal in duties related instruction, supervision, evaluation and the overall administration of the complex or building.
  • Serve as Principal in the absence of Principal.
  • Requisition supplies, textbooks and equipment, conducts inventories, and maintains records, and reviews receipts and purchase orders for such material under the supervision of the Principal.
  • Assist in coordinating safety committees, conducting safety inspections and safety fire drill practice activities.
  • Assist the Principal in coordination and/or arranging for transportation, custodial, cafeteria and other support services.
  • Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process.
  • Supervise when assigned the reporting and monitoring of student attendance, and works with the attendance supervisor for investigative follow up actions.
  • Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the school.
  • Make recommendations to the Principal for changes in administrative procedures, practices, and other such matters that may result in a more effective school administration and leadership.
  • Perform such record keeping functions as the Principal may direct.
  • Supervise teachers and departments as assigned by Principal.
  • Assist in supervision of the cafeteria during lunch hours.
  • Assist in supervising extracurricular programs, assembly programs and assignment of faculty members to assist at school functions.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop and implement a consistent framework for effective teaching and learning that includes a rigorous and relevant standards based instructional practices, and high expectations for student performance.
  • Ensure the development of high performing instructional teachers by providing training and support grounded in best practices which are designed to advance student learning and performing.
  • Establish a continuous improvement cycle that use multiple forms of data and student work examples to support individual, team and school wide improvement goals, identify and address target areas for improvement, measure outcomes and celebrate success.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop articulation agreements with post-secondary institutions for career and technical education programs and academic courses.
  • Monitor curriculum implementation and best practices as assigned.
  • Facilitate data-driven instructional planning through regular professional learning committees and professional development sessions.
  • Plan curriculum development aligned with State and National standards.
  • Plan, organize and lead staff development in coordination with district needs.
  • Attend out-of-district meetings pertaining to school business as assigned by the Principal or District Administration.
  • Assists in the planning and supervision of activities to promote pupil and employee health and safety.
  • Maintains regular attendance and professional appearance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

  • Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.
